How To Make The Most Of Winter

Love it or hate it, winter is here. There’s plenty to embrace about the season but after a year spent mostly indoors for many of us, snuggling up on the sofa for another Netflix binge doesn’t feel quite as appealing as usual. Avoiding the winter blues will be tougher for most of us this year (I’ve already got my SAD light out in preparation) but there are still some ways that we can make the most of the next few months because like it or not, they’re here!

Get Lost In A Book

Since I picked up a Kindle in April (I’m totally converted) I’ve devoured so many books. They’ve served as the perfect escapism and now we’re back to spending more time at home I plan on ticking some more of my Goodreads account. If you’re looking for stories that will be the perfect distraction then here are some of my favourite: Queenie, The Vanishing Half, The Midnight Library, Olive, Everything I Never Told You, Crazy Rich Asians and Such A Fun Age. More into non-fiction? No problem. What about Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race or Becoming Bullet Proof and any fans of The Office/The Mindy Project/ Mindy Kaling should check out her new essay series. If you’re looking for something a little more festive then Adam Kay’s Twas The Night Shift Before Christmas will have you laughing out loud.

Get Outside

If it’s safe to do so then getting outside for a walk in the fresh air can lift your mood instantly. You don’t need to go hiking for hours (unless you want to) to notice the benefit of some fresh air, especially if you’re part of the work-from-home gang. Wear comfortable boots, throw on some thermals and dress for the weather, then you’re good to go. The National Trust have lots of walks you can do around their properties and land, many of which are free and can be found on their website or app. If not, just have a google and see what’s around you. Take a hot drink with you and a few snacks and it can be the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Get *Those* Jobs Done

You know the ones I mean… The ones you always want to do or say you’ll do but never make time to actually finish, like scrapbooking, organising photo albums or sorting out that kitchen cupboard. They’re the jobs that you know you’ll enjoy when you start, or at least make you feel good afterwardsbut are sometimes hard to prioritise. Well here’s your chance! I’ve bulk bought these photon albums, downloaded the Snapfish app and I’m finally getting my photo albums sorted.

Try Some New Recipes

Cooking isn’t fun and relaxing for everyone and I get that, but if it’s something you enjoy then the winter provides you with the perfect chance to experiment. You’re home more so likely have a bit more time to play around with things and let’s be honest, winter food is the best. Cosy carbs, warming stews, curries, baking, there’s no better time to try out a new recipe. My favourite places for inspiration are Hazel’s Instagram, The Green Roasting Tin and Fast Vegan by Leon.
