How To Layer Up This Winter

The temperature has officially dropped so here’s your ultimate guide to layering and staying warm all winter long.

Autumn/winter fashion is the best and I won’t hear otherwise, but the drop in temperatures mean it’s suddenly that bit hard to put together an outfit that you love. Style gives way to practicality because none of us want to be shivering on our commutes. But with the right layering (and some good thermals) you can still put together a great outfit every day of the winter that looks great but is also practical for when it’s too cold to brave bare legs.

Your Guide To Layering (Properly)

Multiple Thin Layers

Lots of thin layers will always keep you warmer than one think chunky jumper. I’m thinking a vest, the a thin thermal, a thicker, baggier thermal or thin knit, thicker knitwear and finally a coat, plus maybe a scarf and a hat for good measure. If you use thin layers you won’t end up looking for feeling too bulky or overheating but you’ll still stay warm.

Invest In Thermals

You really can’t beat a good thermal. Honestly, once you start adding them into your wardrobe you’ll never look back because not only do they actually keep you warm and act as a great base layer but they also help to stop you overheating. They’re created to regulate your temperature so you won’t have that hot flush the second you walk back inside. Thermal tops are my go-to but leggings and socks are also ideal for anyone who feels the cold.

Think Your Outfit Through

If you’re layering up then chances are you’re going to be outside at least for part of the day. Focus on the layers that will keep you warm outside but also take a minute to think about what will happen when you get inside and need to take off a few layers. Thinner plain thermals can make a great base layer but still look appropriate to wear if you have to remove a bigger coat or thicker knit, especially if they’re worn under a blazer for work.

Focus On The Areas That Get Cold

The best way to layer is to focus on the areas you know get coldest - for me it’s wearing the cosiest thermal socks to keep my feet warm whether I’m in boots or trainers. If you love to wear a skirt or a dress then go for thermal tights, always got cold ears? Invest in a really good woollen hat.
