Spring & Summer Trends 2021: Cool, Comfortable & Easy

AD: THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS. ALL AFFILIATE LINKS ARE MARKED WITH ‘*’.

There seems to be a mutual understanding from the fashion world that this seasons’ trends had to be comfortable, effortless and appropriate given that we’ve all sort of forgotten how to wear ‘real’ clothes.

We’ve all become very accustomed to the elasticated waistband/elevated loungewear life in the past 12 months. Suddenly needing to plan outfits that are actually appropriate to wear outside feels somewhat crazy. Even jeans feel a bit intimidating, never mind heels. But with this new found freedom comes the excitement of planning our outfits and having somewhere fancier than our kitchens to wear our favourite things.

Thankfully it seems that some of the biggest trends of the season have kept that thought in mind. Wardrobe priorities for spring and summer this year are as follows: comfortable, cool, easy. Nothing over-complicated with restrictive collars or tight waistlines. We’re going for effortless minimalism that doesn’t secretly require all the effort in the word. They’re easy to pull off whatever your height, body shape or style and can be just as easily picked up in your local charity shop or eBay as they can on the highstreet.

The shirt and trousers worn in this post are both old from H&M a few years back (proving that these really are timeless trends) but similar items are linked below, along with a few others that I think embody that effortless and classic look. The handbag was from ASOS a few years ago and I haven’t had any luck finding anything similar yet, but a quick search on eBay/Vinted/Depop might give you some luck. Good news, the shoes are this season and linked below.

The Top 3 Spring & Summer Trends

Wide Leg Trousers

The perfect way to look office-appropriate but feel like you’re still in your favourite sweatpants. Dress up with a shirt, keep it cool with an oversized t-shirt and some trainers, they’re versatile and actually comfortable - the dream. Linen is your best friend for high summer while a pleated poly or cotton gives a more business-casual vibe.

Oversized shirt

Whether you need an extra layer while you readjust to the office air-con or you just can’t face the idea of anything restrictive, the oversized shirt is your best friend. Wear it open to capture that bra-on-show trend, throw it over a t-shirt or body, tie at the bottom for a cropped effect or go all out on the accessorise for that low-maintenance vibe.

Flat shoes

Finally flat shoes are having a real moment and it’s about time. I don’t know many people who are quite ready to get straight back into the stilettos just yet, so while we all start to transition back to normal life flats are your friend. From chunky dad sandals (I wish I was cool enough) to pointed sling-bakcs and the ever-reliable Vejas, they’re the blend of fashion and comfort we’ve been crying out for. Just remember to break them in, they may be comfortable but they aren’t actually slippers.
